My lived experiences as an African woman striving to use Technology as a medium in solving my community and continent’s issues is why Because She Can was born. Studying Computer Engineering during my undergraduate studies, and transitioning into the Ghanaian Tech space, I saw first-hand how conditions were oftentimes not favorable to me and other women alike. I did not want other women to have to go through what I went through, and worse, before coming out as success stories. And so, my co-founder and I set out to build a community of women and girls who can honestly share their experiences and support one another within their chosen fields of Technology. This community consists of dedicated women whose talents, and efforts are creating a ripple effect throughout their communities.

It is one thing to read statistics about the underrepresentation of women in technology and it’s an entirely different experience to confront the reality that you are a walking statistic. It was difficult for me to reconcile the fact that being either the only woman or one of the very few in the spaces I entered was considered an achievement. The work we do at Because She Can is deeply personal, and a bigger achievement for me is creating opportunities and advocating for policy changes so that women after me can thrive in technology careers. To our incredible community members, dedicated staff, supportive partners, and tireless volunteers, you are the lifeblood of this mission. Together, we are not just imagining a more inclusive future, we are building it. Kudos! To every woman reading this, know you can thrive in tech, rise to leadership positions, and break barriers for yourself and others. Because She Can is more than a community, it’s an attitude, a movement. It’s about paving the way so that the woman behind you looks at you and says, Because she can, so can I.
